WireGuard Slow? 10 Things to Check

WireGuard is lightweight, but the tunnel depends on the slowest part of the path. Measure local Wi-Fi, the VPS route, server load, and destination separately.

Measure the path

Run speed tests without and with VPN. Compare latency and loss to the VPS. Try a closer location. If direct service is slow, the tunnel is not the root cause.

Check server resources

Inspect CPU, memory, network transfer, and competing downloads. Budget plans may throttle bandwidth even when CPU is idle.

Check MTU and routing

A broken MTU can cause fragmentation and stalls. Test a smaller value only after confirming forwarding, NAT, and route basics.

Check client and destination

Try 5 GHz or Ethernet, update the app, and compare destinations. DNS delays can look like slow browsing.

Quick checklist

  • Direct and VPN speeds are compared.
  • VPS load and bandwidth are measured.
  • Location and loss are checked.
  • MTU changes are measured.

This guide focuses on practical self-hosting. See the complete WireGuard server guide for the full setup. Tired of maintaining the server yourself? ZeroBlock handles the VPN infrastructure so you can connect without managing a VPS.
