How to stop YouTube buffering on Wi-Fi and mobile data (2026)
YouTube buffering usually comes from an unstable connection, network congestion, a busy device, or video quality set above what the connection can sustain. Start with the simple checks below. Test a VPN only after confirming that the normal ISP route is the problem.
1. Lower the video quality temporarily
Open the player settings and change Quality from 4K or 1080p to 720p or Auto. If playback becomes smooth, the connection is not consistently fast enough for the previous setting. YouTube recommends Auto because it adapts to current network conditions.
2. Restart the app, device, and router
Close YouTube completely, restart the phone, TV, or computer, and power-cycle the router. This clears temporary app data and network sessions that can cause repeated loading.
3. Test a different connection
Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data. If only Wi-Fi buffers, move closer to the router, use a clean 5 GHz band, or test Ethernet on a TV or computer. Pause downloads, cloud backups, and other streams on the same network.
4. Update YouTube and clear cache
Install the latest YouTube app or browser version. On Android, clearing the YouTube cache can fix damaged temporary data. Do not clear all app data unless a normal restart and update fail.
5. When a VPN may help
